New Fire Retardant Vinyl Compound Coats Telecom Cabling

Emerging requirements for non-lead jacketing in fiber optic applications as well as reduced smoke levels and resistance to lower temperatures has produced a new vinyl plenum compound for communications cable, Plenstar™, developed by PolyOne (Cleveland, Ohio). The formulations meet the UL 910 Steiner tunnel test, the most stringent fire test a cable construction must pass to meet the National Electrical Code. As an inherently fire-retardant material, vinyl is a component of choice for plenum areas where compliance with requirements for flame retardancy and smoke suppression is paramount. The fully recyclable compound is suitable for both conventional and fiber-optic cable.
